What is Internal Medicine

Internists typically act as personal physicians, developing long-term relationships with adult patients. Internists perform regular physical examinations, offer preventive care, diagnose and treat most nonsurgical illnesses and refer serious or unusual cases to an appropriate specialist.

Internists are sometimes referred to as the “doctor’s doctor” because they are often called upon to act as consultants to other physicians to help solve puzzling diagnostic problems.
